PETAL, MS (WDAM) - When it comes to early education, the city of Petal is looking at strategic ways to start earlier than a child's first step in a kindergarten classroom.
The school district hosted a type of "community conversation" where the topic was the need for educational alignment, connecting early childhood to K-12 education. The goal is to work with day care centers, head start programs and families in creating a better transition into formal education, which would prepare children and further advance their ability.
"A part of it has to do with awareness, helping families to be aware that those everyday opportunities when children are very small are all learning opportunities. So we just know based on research that the stage is really set for how successful a child will be before they ever enter school," said Nadine Coleman with the Petal School District.
Petal is just one of four cities in the country chosen by the National League of Cities to exemplify this type of educational work which has been ongoing in the city of years.
