Southern Pines ASPCA 100-K challenge kickoff Tuesday night

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Southern Pines Animal Shelter is one of 49 shelters in the nation chosen to compete in the ASPCA 100-K challenge.

Tuesday night they are throwing a kick off party at the Keg and Barrel on Hardy Street to help gain community support for the shelter and it's adoptable pets.

The competition goes from August through October with the goal being to raise adoption rates by 300 animals per month over the previous year and to also increase the number of lost pets being reunited with their owners.

Everyone in the community is invited to the event is encouraged to bring their pets along. The kickoff will have live music, free food, and plenty of information on how to volunteer to help reunite lost pets and their families.

The more pets that find their forever homes, the closer Southern Pines gets to winning the 100-k.

"Our shelter would love to have an extra hundred thousand dollars that we could put toward improving our shelter facility,"  said Valerie Rachal, director of the Southern Pines Spay and Neuter Clinic. "We really need the room for potential adopters to meet pets that they might want to adopt so rather than climbing in a cage with a dog to find out if you would like to take that dog home, maybe an adoption room where you could sit down and play with that dog would let you get to know the animal better."

Rachal said the shelter with the highest increase will win the money, however ultimately the animals win by finding their forever homes.

The kickoff party is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.
