Pipeline safety meeting in Hattiesburg

By Karrie Leggett

HATTIESBURG,MS (WDAM)- Pipeline safety was the topic of discussion Tuesday morning at a meeting held by the Mississippi Public Service commission.

Nearly 100 people gathered at Mack's West, on highway 98 in Hattiesburg, to learn more about the Pipes Act. Many power, gas and emergency agencies took part in the meeting to discuss the many regulations and safety tips regarding dig laws in the state.

Mark McCarver, Director of Pipeline Safety for the Mississippi Public Service Commission, says that these meetings are important in strengthening Mississippi's enforcement of pipeline and digging laws.

"At this point we really don't have an enforcement in the laws. Which is something, that to be honest, if we don't do it in Mississippi the federal government is going to do it and mandate it. It's a fact of us doing what is right in Mississippi to make life safer, or our friends in Washington will come in and do it for us," said McCarver.
