PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Sanitation workers in Petal will begin their routes an hour earlier at least for the rest of the week in an attempt to beat the heat.
The early start will allow the workers to finish their routes earlier and thus spend less time working when temperatures are at their highest.
Residents are asked to put their cans out the night before their scheduled trash day to ensure it gets picked up.
The early schedule will remain as long as temperatures remain at dangerously high levels.
"The heat index is supposed to be 110 to 115 degrees for the rest of this week," said Dale Nutting, Sanitation Director, City of Petal. "If we come in a little earlier the guys can get it done before it gets extremely hot. That way nobody gets heat exhaustion or passes out on me."
Trucks will begin their routes the rest of this week at 5:45 a.m.
