SOSO, MS (WDAM) - Firefighters from several District one departments in Jones County battled the heat and a structure fire that destroyed a home in Soso Sunday afternoon.

The fire broke out at shortly after 2:00 p.m. at home on Barnes Drive.

The homeowner was reportedly asleep at the time of the fire and woke up when the smoke alarm went off. She was able to escape the home unharmed.

Firefighters from Soso were the first on the scene and found the home fully involved.

Volunteers from Calhoun, Hebron, Pleasant Ridge and Shady Grove helped battle the blaze for more than three hours.  Because of the excessive heat firefighters had to be rotated often to help keep then from suffering heat exhaustion.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Laurel were on the scene as well as paramedics to assist in keeping the firefighters safe and hydrated.

No firefighters were injured fighting the fire.
