HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - A Southern Miss organization has appointed new officers, with a familiar face in the Hub City serving at the helm.

Melissa Carpenter, a secretary in the Student Activities office at the University, will assume the role of President for the Association of Office Professionals for the 2010 through 2011 academic year.

The group includes one hundred members that fill secretarial, support and assistant positions at USM. The Southern Miss chapter features several committees that work on projects like contributing to the Hub City community.

Carpenter said, "We're gearing up for the United Way garage sale in support of our community service, giving back to the community. We're also going to have several workshops for professional development for our members. And we are also going to reconnect with our Gulf Coast campus. We are going to try and have some of our meetings down on the coast this year."

Carpenter is also the recipient of a Habitat for Humanity home. To complete work on her Celeste Place Subdivision house, 18-thousand dollars needs to be raised.
