Murderer executed at Parchman; third this year

Convicted killer Joseph Daniel Burns has been put to death by lethal injection.

Burns, 42, was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday at the state penitentiary at Parchman.

The execution was briefly delayed at the request of the U.S. Supreme Court while the justices reviewed some defense arguments. But the court ended up denying a stay of execution.

Burns stabbed to death Tupelo motel manager Floyd Melvin McBride during a robbery in 1994.

He's the third killer put to death at Parchman so far this year.
