GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A manhunt was launched in George County for a driver and her passenger who allegedly ran over and killed George County Sheriff Gary Wellford.
Authorities were searching a wooded area along North Bexley Road near Lucedale for 18-year-old Brandy Williams and her passenger, 24-year-old Christopher Baxter.
Authorities posted a $5,000 reward for information leading to their capture.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol says the couple was fleeing officers on Highway 98 near the Greene County line in a maroon truck when they allegedly struck Wellford, who was placing spike strips on the highway to stop them. The pair then left their vehicle and fled into the woods.
