HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - The four story residence halls of the Century Park Complex at Southern Miss will accommodate some 864 academically gifted freshmen and some upper classmen this fall. Three of the four halls will house women.
Chris Crenshaw is the University's Director of Residence Life. He said, "The upper class women's facility, that was designed because we are taking Elam Arms out of our inventory so we needed a place for the women to go to."
The complex is nestled in a gated community that includes swipe card security features. Additionally, Century Park boasts a Learning Center for students to study and take classes in.
Many environmentally friendly amenities are part of the residential complex. They include low flow faucets and showers, light sensors, an energy efficient laundry room, lots of covered bike racks and preferred parking for those who drive hybrid vehicles.
Crenshaw said, "This facility is making an impact on the environment in a positive manner. And we'll do programming for our students to help them learn how they can make a positive impact on the environment in the future."
The 39-million dollar Century Park Development is the largest in the University's history, but it's not the only construction site on campus. A 12-hundred vehicle parking garage is being built across the street from the new residence halls. The garage is set to open in March, 2011.
