HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The city of Hattiesburg will now be spending more money to house inmates at the Forrest County Jail.
The Forrest County Board of Supervisors voted to increase the rate charged to the city by $3. The city was paying $32 dollars per inmate per day, the increase brings it to $35. Board of Supervisors president David Hogan says it's not something the city didn't expect and the increase is out of necessity.
"It's just a matter of the county needing to pas son the cost to the other jurisdiction. We're seeing an increase in food, medical, electricity and it's just a rising cost, the state's cut us back on the amount they give us for inmates and we're just trying to recoup some of our money," said Hogan."
Hogan also says even with the increase, it still doesn't cover all of the expenses.
