Mississippi beach cleaning crews protest layoffs

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - About 30 beach cleanup workers in

Mississippi staged a protest this weekend saying they were laid off

without notice.

But the president of RCI, a Louisiana-based company, says the

workers have been paid for the time they worked.

RCI President Joseph Rotolo Jr. tells WLOX television on the

Mississippi coast that his company is a subcontractor for BP.

RCI hires and oversees local workers to clean up from the BP oil

spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Rotolo says BP told subcontractors Friday evening to reduce the

number of hours scheduled for workers to do clean up. The workers

protested on Saturday.
