HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Another USM graduate who played a major leadership in the war on terror is coming back home.
School officials plan a 2 p.m. Friday announcement that Maj. Gen. Jeff Hammond, retired commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division in Iraq, will become the newest member of USM's athletic staff.
Hammond, 54, is a 1978 graduate of Southern Miss and played quarterback for the football team from 1976-78.
He recently commanded over 20,000 troops in Iraq in the war on terror. Hammond becomes the second such high-ranking military leader to return to his alma mater.
Retired general Buford Blount, a 1971 graduate who commanded the 3rd infantry division in Iraq, now teaches at USM.
Hammond's role in the athletic department is expected to be outlined Friday.
