HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Sunday afternoon fire caused significant damage to a Hattiesburg home.

The fire happened around 2:30 p.m. at a home in the 2000 block of Adeline Street.

A spokesman from the Hattiesburg Department says a neighbor saw smoke coming from the home and went over to investigate. The neighbor spotted fire inside the home and called 9-1-1. The neighbor then used a water hose to attempt to keep the fire from spreading until firefighters arrived.

Rescue one, Ladder one, Engine five among others arrived on the scene and were able to contain the fire quickly.

The house suffered fire damage to about 25 percent of the inside and smoke damage to most of the home.

No one was at home at the time of fire and no firefighter was injured fighting the blaze.

The cause is under investigation.
