JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Jones County woman escaped a late night fire thanks to her barking dog.

Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna said around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday a fire started inside of a home north of Sand Hill Baptist Church on Sand Hill Church Road in Jones County.

McKenna would not say how the fire started. He said power to the home was recently turned off because the occupant was scheduled to move out this week.

He said the woman was asleep when the fire started but was awakened by her dog.

"There is a dog out there that needs to get a big old steak," said McKenna. "That dog barked and barked and barked until that lady woke up, and when she woke up she was almost at the point where she might not have been able to get up out of the building."

He said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
