HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Education officials welcomed a new Early P.A.C.E Head Start Center Tuesday in Hattiesburg during an open house.
The renovated former band hall by Hawkins Elementary School serves twenty four children ages zero to thirty six months old.
Officials said the facility began serving kids on April twelfth. It's designed to provide a place for teen Hub City mothers to take their small children, while they complete their education.
Leticia Tatum has a son who attends the center. Tatum said, "I love it here, the teachers are wonderful. My son has learned so much since he has been going here, and I just love it."
Jacqueline Milsap is Hattiesburg's Early Head Start Specialist. She said children attend the center from seven AM to three PM during the weekdays.
"They have so much fun. They get to come in and have activities, and they get to go on buggy rides outside. The teachers get to interact with the children all day and have fun. And the parents are welcome to come in and visit with their children all day," said Milsap.
Milsap said the renovations for the Head Start Center were paid for through a 136-thousand dollar federal expansion grant.
