Hattiesburg,MS(WDAM)- It's the "legal" way to get high, the latest drug with to many names and local law enforcement officials want it banned.
"Poplarville Police Captain Rossie Creel says, "hopefully by July first of next year it's going to be state law that the substance is banned. That will supercede any of our local ordinances."
Pearl River County was successful in banning the sale of herbal essence but Hattiesburg Circuit Court Judge Bob Helfrich weighed in on the controversial substance saying "the ban must be nationwide."
"I know that several states and countries have outlawed this drug."
Creel says, "it's all imported, a lot of it comes from the Chec Republic, it is being imported into the united states."
" I went out and looked at it and spice or k-2 or mojo or whatever you want to call it it's in a bunch of the local retailers."
It's so easy to get a hold of, you don't even have to leave your home to find it. Just a few minutes on line and it's on the way.
Helfrich is in charge of the 12th District Drug Court and says, he did a little investigation of his own after finding it on a drug court participant.
"Nobody knows what it does to you, I mean smoking cigarettes we know causes cancer, we don't know what this is and you are smoking it, you know it's crazy."
Ca pt. Creel says, they do know it is fives times more potent than marijuana.
"It is obviously a powerful substance that is going to cause some serious issues if we don't get rid of it and get ahead of the game."
Helfrich says, it's not the first time the U.S. has been hit with a new drug and it's just a matter of time before it becomes illegal.
"I feel certain that the D.E.A. will take steps to outlaw it."
