HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) – A famous University of Southern Mississippi alumnus has made good on a promise to help researchers involved with the Gulf Coast oil spill.

Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, a 1969 graduate of the university, donated a Dragonfly Boatworks shallow water attention terminal boat expected to be delivered Friday on the Gulf Coast.

The SWAT boat was given to Southern Mississippi and the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory after Buffett met with USM president Martha Saunders and her research team about their needs regarding the examination of the spill.

Although Buffett will not be on hand for the delivery of the boat, family members are expected to attend a christening of the boat at a later date.
