POPLARVILLE, MS (WDAM) - Pearl River Community College has set a new record for summer enrollment. Nearly 2,000 students are taking classes this summer at the Poplarville, Hattiesburg and Waveland campuses.
That's more than a 15 percent increase over last summer's enrollment. Pearl River Community College officials say there are several reasons for the increase.
"One reason is students are trying to get a jump on their college education in the summertime," said Chuck Abadie, director of public relations for Pearl River Community College. "Also, we think they're doing that because there are tuition increases coming in the fall, due to the budget problems in the state. What we're already seeing is this is going to lead to an enrollment increase in the fall as well," Abadie said.
Also, nearly 130 more students are taking online classes this summer.
