HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg residents gathered at Vernan Dahmer Park Saturday for an annual celebration of freedom that dates back 145 years. It was all part of the annual, "Juneteenth" celebration in the Hub City.
The event commemorates the date of June 19th, 1865, when a group of slaves in south Texas first learned of their emancipation. Hattiesburg residents celebrated with music, food and a softball tournament.
This was the 26th year for the Hattiesburg Juneteenth celebration.
