Pickering investigates Choctaw/Fordice deal

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - State Auditor Stacey Pickering is looking into a deal made between the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and former Governor Kirk Fordice...this as the Indian nation plans to build a casino in Jones County.

The tribal state compact was signed by Chief Phillip Martin and Fordice in 1992. Pickering says the agreement allows all generated revenue from the Pearl River Resort to not be taxed and for all the money to go back to the Choctaw nation.

He says this is not how other casinos in the state operate and he's checking the constitutionality of the compact. Pickering is a Jones County resident and he, along with Governor Haley Barbour and Lt. Governor Phil Bryant have publicly voiced their opposition to the Jones County proposal.
