HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Southern Miss has established a special fund to support the University's Oil Spill Response Team.

The team was organized within five days of the oil rig disaster and it includes USM personnel from the Gulf Coast Research Lab, the Department of Marine Science at Stennis Space Center, the Gulf Park Campus as well as scientists from Hattiesburg.

They have combined forces to monitor the spill and it's effects on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Southern Miss officials say the fund will provide an opportunity for folks to financially support the team. Bob Pierce is the University's Vice President for Advancement.

"And so this fund will be a discretionary fund that Dr. Saunders can use to apply charitable contributions to it's highest and best use for the benefit of addressing the oil spill," said Pierce.

The Southern Miss Oil Spill Response Team is also collaborating with both private and government entities to track and research the disaster.
