Head-on collision near Hattiesburg leaves one dead, two injured

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - One person died and two others were taken to a hospital Monday night after a head-on collision near Hattiesburg.

Police are investigating the I-59 crash which occurred around 11 p.m. near the south Hattiesburg exit.

According to witnesses, a black BMW was traveling northbound in the southbound lane and then collided head-on with an 18-wheeler.

The male driver of the car was pronounced dead on the scene and was the only person in the vehicle. The two people in the truck were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

Police aren't sure why the driver of the car was going the wrong way, and his identity is currently being withheld.
