Having emerged as champions of the Conference USA baseball tournament, Coach Scott Berry’s Golden Eagles begin their quest to make it to Omaha for the College World Series for the second time.  The first time was last year when Southern Miss went to the big show at the end of retiring Coach Corky Palmer’s final year.  The Eagles are on the road for Auburn to play in their first regional tournament OF 2010 in pursuit of making it two years in a row Omaha.  But they are already starting out as champions and we congratulate them on their Conference USA crown.  As we’ve often noted, the Pine Belt region of South Mississippi has truly developed into the most dominant baseball section of the Magnolia state.

In high school baseball we had another bumper crop this year with state championships won by area schools.  Sumrall, Petal, and Richton all won state championships in their respective divisions.  We have grown used to seeing championship teams from this area for the past 30 to 35 years.  That represents not only a lot of talented players…but a lot of talented coaches and dedicated fans as well.  It is thrilling each year to see which teams will rise to the fore.  As we congratulate all the championship teams…we additionally wish the Southern Miss Golden Eagles all the best as they begin their NCAA post-season play Friday afternoon as they play Clemson at Auburn.
