DeSoto County selects where to build new jail

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County supervisors have selected a 51.3-acre tract of agricultural property just south of Hernando for a new jail.

Board President Bill Russell tells The Commercial Appeal that consultants told the board that the tract was the most desirable property of the sites that were proposed. Two other proposed sites had been opposed by local residents.

Final action on the property awaits settling on a price. Russell hopes to have that resolved by when the board meets on June 21. The city of Hernando must also annex the site to comply with a state attorney general's opinion that the jail be located within the county seat.

Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson says there should be no problem because the landowner would agree to annexation.
