Hattiesburg stabbing leaves one dead

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - One person is dead and another is in a jail cell after a stabbing in Hattiesburg Tuesday night.

The suspect, Gordon Suiter, 57, was arrested at a group home which caters to mentally challenged adults along the 1700 of James Street.

Police said the male victim was stabbed with a metal object in the upper torso during some sort of altercation and later died at the hospital. Police aren't sure what caused the altercation, and say Suiter remained on the scene the entire time.

This brings the total number of homicides in Hattiesburg to four since the beginning of 2010.

"0ne thing I just want to make sure the public knows is that this isn't just random people going out murdering individuals," said Sgt. Allen Murray with the Hattiesburg Police Department. "Most of the murders that have happened are all people who have been acquainted with one another."

The suspect and victim were believed to both be residents at the home. The identity of the victim is being withheld until family members are notified.
