HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Over three hundred young men from around the state arrived on the USM campus Sunday for the start of Boys State.
The students were chosen to participate based on academic performance, service to community, and potential for leadership.
The week long event will include simulated political campaigns, elections, and legislative proceedings to help the students get a better understanding of the political process.
Boys State was started by the American Legion back in the thirties. This is the first year the event has been held at Southern Miss.
"This is a great new partnership we have with the University, " said Shane Aguirre, Boys State Director. " With the three hours of college credit we're getting for the delegates."
State Auditor Stacey Pickering was the first of several state elected officials who will speak to the delegates this week.
