HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The city of Hattiesburg is about to celebrate a grand opening of a park decades in the making. Chain Park at Twin Forks in East Hattiesburg at the end of East Eighth Street is officially completed with phase one and open to the public.

The 37 acres is now equipped with lighted walking paths, playground equipment and landscaping.

The park is named after former Hattiesburg Mayor Bobby Chain who bought the land back in the early 1980s with a vision it would eventually become a recreational park.

"We want it to be a safe, fun environment, a family friendly atmosphere. We want to make sure that people can use what the city has to offer," said Hattiesburg spokeswoman Jeanetta Bennett.

Two more phases will add more walking paths, a pavilion, amphitheater and restrooms. The park will also link up with downtown Hattiesburg. The grand opening celebration will continue until 9 o'clock Friday evening with food, entertainment and fireworks.
