Columbia to cut teacher's pay

COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - Columbia school officials say teacher's pay will be cut by $500 next year to avoid giving teachers furloughs.

Superintendent Marietta James says cuts for members of the administrative staff will be higher.

The school district has already laid off 25 assistant teachers and two nurses because of state budget problems.

This new cost-cutting measure will save the district over $90,000. The pay cuts only affect certified personnel such as teachers and administrators.

Lamar county recently asked its teachers to forgo $600 of their annual local supplement in order to save over $400,000.
