I tried writing in this space about a month ago and got three paragraphs into it before I gave up. I just feel like I'm saying the same things over and over and not making any real changes that stick. But all I can do is try again and keep trying until I get out of this rut.More >>
I had a little bit of a "woe-is-me" week and didn't really track or watch what I was eating. But about three days ago I started thinking, "this will end on Wednesday," and I woke up this morning ready to go. I weighed myself, tracked it on the Weight Watchers site, and opened up my Points tracker for the first time in way too long.
As I was eating breakfast at work, a friend came over and told me he'd gained 20 pounds and was starting Weight Watchers again. Then two more chimed in that they'd also had a few bad weeks and were just getting back on track.
And it got me thinking about one of the factors that might have been affecting my weight loss – time of year.
I find it much easier to lose weight in the spring and summer than the winter. Winter just screams for comfort food. The heavy clothes let you ignore small gains (which add up). And the excuses to stay inside are plentiful. There are also all those holidays that seem so focused on eating and drinking.
As crazy as it is that it feels like I've blinked and it's jumped from September to May, I'm also excited. May is a great time to focus on losing weight. Here's why:
No heavy sweaters and jackets to hide under; I'm wearing a skirt and sleeveless top today and it's helping me focus on wanting to stick to my plan
The change in seasons is a great time to go through the closet and get rid of all the cold-weather clothes that are too big or feel frumpy. This is a great motivator!
All sorts of great fruits and vegetables are in season and readily available in the store and from street vendors on every corner
Even if you can't get to the gym, it's so nice out that it's easy to motivate to walk places and get some easy exercise
