HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Four Hattiesburg police officers killed in the line of duty were remembered Wednesday during the department's 2010 Police Memorial Service.

The annual ceremony is held in conjunction with National Police Week. On March ninth, 1952 officers Jessie James Everett and M.W. Vinson Junior lost their lives while on duty. In May 1973, Sergeant David Anthony was killed, and in December 1984 Sergeant Jackie Dole Sherrill lost her life while serving the Hattiesburg Police Department.

Family members of the fallen officers said it's important for the public to recognize how dangerous police work can be. James Everett lost his father, Jesse James Everett when he was three years old.

Everett said, "It's good to know that he won't ever be forgotten. Sure I would have been a little selfish and I would have loved to have had some of those T-ball games with him. But he was doing what he thought he had to do and I'm very proud of him."

Forrest County's District Attorney, John Mark Weathers was the ceremony's guest speaker, while Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree issued a proclamation for "Police Memorial Day" in the Hub City.
