HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Over 140 Strong Women of the Pine Belt were recognized Tuesday during a luncheon and awards presentation at Hattiesburg's Lake Terrace Convention Center.

Wesley Medical Center's fifth annual Strong Women celebration recognizes ladies who give back to their community in a variety of categories.

Those include defender, leadership, mentor, perseverance and promise. This year, a record number of women were nominated by their peers, 143 in total.

Hattiesburg realtor Gwen James was the winner in the leadership category.

James said, "It was quite an honor and humbling and I actually had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't at a funeral. They were saying so many nice things and that is where they normally say nice things. It was very special that there are people out there that would do this."

Strong Women also featured a keynote address by breast cancer survivor and heart transplant recipient, Toni Wild.
