TUPELO, MS (AP) - Some elementary schools in Northeastern Mississippi have the option to place students in all-male or all-female classrooms.

The Lee County School District has given the option to its kindergarten to fifth-grade schools. The Tupelo School District is considering pilot programs for third- to fifth-grade schools.

Those programs, however, would still need school board approval. The single-gender classes would consist only of students who chose them.

Educators say such classes allow teachers to focus on the interests and learning tendencies of each gender. Other school districts in the area also have experimented with single-gender classes.
