Storms cause widespread damage in Jones County

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - High winds took down power lines and uprooted trees in the Laurel area this morning causing widespread damage.

Jones County Emergency Management officials said straight line winds in exceeded 50 miles per hour.

About 1,000 residents and businesses were without power for up to 4 hours.  At least one home and several automobiles were also damaged. 

Damage was also reported from the country club on Highway 84 west to Laurel High School on West 12th Street.
