Jones County business helps benefit hit-and-run victims

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Jones county business took time out Saturday to help a Petal couple that was injured in a hit and run accident.

Maks Quick Stop in Eastabuchie held a bake sale to benefit Dustin and Sarah Helton. They had cookies, cakes, cupcakes, and other sweets for donations.

The couple was struck from behind as they were riding home on their motorcycle.  They were both seriously injured.

Authorities charged an Ovett man with the hit - and - run.  All of the donations will help the Helton's with their medical expenses.

"Everybody knows everybody and it's important that we reach out to them," said Maks employee, Michael McDonald. Everybody wants to help and they are calling and it's just an important thing."

"I'm overwhelmed at the support and the love and the generosity of this community," said Sarah Helton.

The goal was to raise at least $25 00, but Mak's passed that goal with about $3200.

Dustin Helton was released from the hospital Friday, but his recovery could take up to a year. Family members and friends have set up an account. You can go by any Bancorp South bank to make a donation.
