JACKSON, MS (AP) - The Mississippi Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear an appeal from Johnny Ray Brown, who was sentenced to life in prison for the 2004 death of a 27-year-old woman.

Brown was convicted in Hinds County in 2006 for the slaying of Violar Bracey, the mother of two small children. Prosecutors say Bracey was found face up in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to the head on a bed at Regency Inn in Jackson.

The state Court of Appeals upheld Brown's conviction last year. The court rejected Brown's arguments that the jury was denied the chance to hear his claim that the shooting was an accident.

The Appeals Court said the evidence in the case didn't support such an instruction to the jury.
