HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg police department has made the state's largest known heroin bust during a traffic stop in south Hattiesburg.
Almost 28 pounds of heroin was found in an engine compartment of a Dodge ram truck late last Friday afternoon. Authorities say it's street value is more than a million dollars. Officer Chris Fagan pulled over the driver of the truck, Antonio Arias. Arias's past criminal history and story about traveling to New York from Texas prompted a canine search of the vehicle. Arias was arrested and charged with possession of over a kilo. Officers say it's unusual to discover that amount of heroin.
"We had never seen it actually before," said officer Fagan. "We were able to cut it open when we got it dismantled from the compartment and we were able to test it and it came back as heroin."
Antonio Arias had bond set at 750,000 dollars. However, he was bonded out by rapid release bonding of Hattiesburg Tuesday. When asked who signed for the bond, company officials cited client confidentiality.
