COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - The Columbia School District is laying off 27 employees due to state budget cuts.
Twenty-five assistant teachers and the district's two nurses will lose their jobs at the end of this school year.
Superintendent Marietta James said a decision has not been made on who will be laid off in the assistant teacher positions. She said the district will save just over $1 million.
James said the decision was tough, but it had to be done.
"It's horrible to have to tell people that they won't have a job next year because of money," said James.
"This has nothing to do with philosophy of education; it has nothing to do with job performance," said James. "It strictly has to do with money. And it has been extremely difficult to do that.
James also said personnel makes up 85%of the school district's budget.
