Hattiesburg mayor announces he will run for governor

HATTIESBURG, MS (ASSOCIATED PRESS) - Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree says he will run for governor in 2011.

DuPree, a Democrat, told the Hattiesburg American he has talked with Hattiesburg City Council members, his family and friends about running.

DuPree said he is now in the process of putting together a team to work out campaign strategies and fundraising opportunities in time for the qualifying deadline next year.

Governor Haley Barbour, a Republican in his second term, cannot run for another term.

Among the possible gubernatorial candidates are Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant, a Republican, and Democrat Bill Luckett, a Clarksdale lawyer.
