PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Grant funding will cover exploration costs into possible soil contamination on 70 acres of Petal property adjacent to the Leaf River.

Petal city officials had hoped to develop the land into a recreational area in the future.

Petal, Hattiesburg and Forrest County are sharing $1 million in federal funding from the Brownfield's Coalition Assessment Grant.

Urban planner and consultant Jay Estes says the grant's purpose is to find areas with supposed contamination and clean out the affected areas for future development.

Mayor Hal Marx says there has been some interest from private groups to develop a recreational space on the land. He says the land is designated in the flood way, and structures cannot be built there.
