Funeral services set for former MEMA director

JACKSON, MS (WDAM) - Funeral services have been set for former Mississippi Emergency Management Agency director Jim Maher.

Maher, who led MEMA from 1980 to 2000, died Monday. He was 80. Services will be held Wednesday at Lakewood Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson, according to funeral home officials.

Burial with full military honors will be in Lakewood Memorial Cemetery. Maher led the state's emergency operations through countless floods, tornadoes and hazardous material situations, as well as numerous hurricanes, including Georges, Opal and Elena.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, five children and two grandchildren.

    Saturday morning, contestants in the 68th annual Mississippi Miss Hospitality Pageant gathered at the University of Southern Mississippi for one last social event before the final competition.
