HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A local legislator wants a new state law restricting access to areas close to oil company storage tanks. Hattiesburg senator Billy Hudson says he'll pre-file a bill for next year's legislative session to require fencing, barbed wire and signage around such tanks.
Hudson says a law is needed to prevent tragedies like the one that took the lives of 18-year-old Wade White and 16-year-old Devon Byrd of Carnes. They were killed last October when an storage tank exploded.
A public hearing on the subject is scheduled for next Tuesday at U.S.M.
A news crew from CNN interviewed Hudson in Hattiesburg today about his bill, because if passed, it might be the first such state law in the country.
