Petal soldier, father-to-be, killed in Iraq

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A soldier and resident of Petal was killed in Iraq on April 7.

PFC Anthony Blount, 21, and his commanding officer, Lt. Robert Wilson Collins, were both killed when a vehicle they were riding in was damaged by an improvised explosive device.

Blount was part of the 164th Infantry headquartered in Savannah, GA.

He was a graduate of Petal High School and joined the military soon after graduating, according to family members.

He was married to Amanda Blount and was expected home in May to witness the birth of a first child.

He is survived by daughter Avery Blount; parents Billy and Kay Blount of Petal; sisters Laken Blount of Southaven and Lori McRae of Petal.

Services will be held at Moore Funeral Home in Petal. The body is expected to arrive Saturday.

We are told that Lt. Collins is from Tyrone, Georgia, but has relatives living in Jones County.
