HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - April 15 is just around the corner. It's the day your 2009 taxes must be submitted and if you haven't already filed, the clock could be working against you.
"We're getting close to the deadline," said IRS spokeswoman Dee Stepter. "You don't want to be at the last minute. That's how people miss out on valuable deductions by waiting until the last minute."
If you are caught in a bind, don't panic. Filing electronically is a fast and easy way to complete your taxes.
Choosing direct deposit for refunds gets your money to you quicker than a check being mailed to you.
Always check several times to see if you may have made an error.
Pay electronically. The IRS has a safe and secure method for paying online, by phone, or by an electronic federal tax payment system.
What if you don't think you will be able to file by the deadline?
"If April 15th has rolled around and you are still not able to file the return you can request a six month extension of time to file, but it's not an extension of time to pay," said Stepter.
If you are not able to make a payment in full, you can request an installment agreement by using the online payment agreement or attaching form 9465 to your return.
