Suspect arrested in Forrest County hit-and-run accident

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - An Ovett man has been arrested and charged in connection with a hit-and-run accident that sent a young Forrest County couple to the hospital Saturday.

Joseph Harold Bryant, 31, was picked up Tuesday afternoon after tips led Forrest County Sheriff's deputies to his damaged SUV in Jones County.

The hit-and-run happened Saturday night as Dustin and Sarah Helton were heading home on their motorcycle.

Investigators said as the couple turned into their subdivision off Eastabuchie Road, their bike was struck in the rear by a dark cherry-colored SUV, a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer.

Sarah was thrown from the bike and Dustin was dragged nearly 100 feet.

The driver fled the scene leaving behind a portion of his front bumper.

The couple, both of whom are respiratory therapists who work for area medical facilities, remain hospitalized with serious injuries. Dustin is listed as critical, and Sarah is listed as being in fair condition.

Authorities said Bryant hid his damaged SUV along a dirt road and then called a friend to come get him saying he had struck a deer.

The SUV has been located in the friend's yard in Jones County.

Bryant is charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident.
