Car fire could be connected to shooting

COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - Authorities say an early morning car fire at a Columbia residence could be connected to the shooting death of a Marion County man earlier this week. Columbia Police say someone set fire to the interior of a car in the driveway of a home at 414 Nathan Street around 1:30 a.m.

Detective Albert Preston says someone threw a burning mop through a smashed windshield, causing minor damage. A passing police officer noticed the fire and alerted the fire department.

No one was home at the time and nobody was injured.

Preston says there's a possibility the fire could be related to the shooting death of 29-year-old Kenrodrick Jefferson on Monday, but he declined to give details on how it might be connected.

The Marion County Sheriff's Department is investigating Jefferson's murder.

No arrests have been made yet in the arson fire or the shooting.
