President Obama makes Surprise visit to Afghanistan

KABUL (AP) - President Barack Obama has made a surprise visit to Afghanistan for a firsthand look at the 8-year-old war he has dramatically escalated.

After an overnight flight from Washington, the president landed in Afghanistan for a stay of just a few hours. He flew by helicopter from Bagram Air Field to the capital, where he met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his Cabinet at the presidential palace.

The White House says Karzai was notified about Obama's visit just an hour before he arrived. It's Obama's second stop in a war zone as commander in chief, coming about a year after a similarly secretive trip to Iraq.

Obama visited Afghanistan once before, as part of a congressional delegation in 2008 when he was a presidential candidate and U.S. senator.
