HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Dozens of high school and junior high students are on the campus of Southern Miss putting their brains to work, as the university plays host to the state's science olympiad.

Student teams compete in the categories of science, technology, engineering and math. The olympiad is designed to challenge students to incorporate what they've learned in the classroom to what they've learned on their on to come up with solutions.

Unlike a traditional science fair, the olympiad teaches students how to work in teams, generated results.

"It's so important to get more and more of these kids involved in the STEM. The science, technology, engineering and mathematics and science olympiad is really one way to do that because everyone of these events are very closely tied to the national science education standards and so teachers can actually do these things in their classroom and then they can take what they've learned out here and actually compete and have a great time doing it," said Olympiad Director, Sheila Hendry.

The top high school and junior high teams from the olympiad will be invited to compete on the national level.
