President Obama pulls funding from Richton Salt Dome project

By Terrica Washington – email

Perry County (WDAM) - Environmentalists in South Mississippi claimed victory Thursday as President Barack Obama plans to remove and redirect funding for the Richton Salt Dome project from the Department of Energy's budget.

According to The Sun Herald, President Obama and Secretary of Energy Steven Chu not only want to eliminate future funding requests for the project, but they also are planning to redirect "$71 million left in the department's budget for the project."

The redirected funds would be used for operation and maintenance at existing Strategic Petroleum Reserves in Louisiana and Texas.

Many watching the issue have pointed out that Obama's plan is just a proposal and that Congress likely would have the last say in the matter.
