Lafayette police cars are getting dashboard cameras

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Lafayette patrol cars will soon be equipped with dashboard cameras, an initiative that police say could serve to protect residents and officers.

Police have been awarded $359,000 in federal stimulus money to install about 70 dashboard cameras in police units.

The City-Parish Council on Tuesday formally accepted the federal money into the budget, and the cameras are expected to be online this year.

Police Major. George Alfred said the new cameras will be triggered whenever an officer opens the car door or turns on emergency lights, creating a video record that could quickly settle allegations of excessive force.

He said the federal money will pay to equip nearly all patrol cars with cameras.
