HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Public School District began trying new technology to help education.

An Apple representative visited Thames Elementary today to show teachers and students how to use the iPod Touch in the classroom. Applications on the iPod help students learn mathmatics, reading, and other core curriculum.

The school's director of technology, Ross Randall, has written a grant to help fund the cost of the new technology.

He says, "The teachers, the ones we spoke with today, are really excited and they're asking the question, "Why haven't we done this already?" They want it now."

Randall also says the transition of adding ipods to the classroom should be quick.  "Kids are already familiar with the technology. It's already something that's a part of their every day lives. So for them to jump in and start using them is just natural."

The district hopes to put one mobile cart in every elementary school which includes 20 iPods and one laptop.
